Latent TB and Humira

This is somewhat related to a thread I already had going on here. After a lot of consideration and going back and forth, I decided to give Humira a shot in hopes that I could benefit in treatment for both my ulcerative colitis and AS diagnoses. However... During my screening tests for Humira, it was determined that I also have latent TB. My first reaction was that Humira would be off the table as an option permanently. But after talking to my various doctors, they all seem to think that I can still proceed with the Humira once the latent TB is treated. In fact, my internal medicine doctor claims that I can start the Humira once the TB medications get going (after about a month) if I wish to. I was somewhat apprehensive about biologics anyway, and after the latent TB diagnosis I became even more unsure.

I guess my question goes out to anyone who has went through similar circumstances, or know anyone who has. Mainly if they decided to move forward with the Humira (or any other biologics for that matter) once the setback of latent TB was addressed and what the experiences were. I've read through many posts on here and Humira seems to have been a great option for many. This is making me lean more towards keeping an open mind about it and possibly going through with the Humira treatment once the TB medications are started, or at least after that treatment is completed. Thanks for any input!

I don't have personal experience, but several posters here have had latent TB and continued with a biologic after treatment; it sometimes shows up in initial screening, and occasionally during a routine TB test while treatment has been ongoing. If you do a search for TB you may find some threads.

I believe starting the biologic after a month or so of treatment is considered standard protocol.

I am one of those who has had great response to Humira.

My latent TB was also discovered during screening before beginning Humira, back in March, 2011. I was able to start Humira after 4 weeks of Isoniazid treatment, and had to complete a 9 month course of Isoniazid overall. I've been on and off Humira, Enbrel & Simponi since then without any problems.

Thanks for the feedback. I start my 9 month go of Isoniazid and B6 tomorrow. I go back to the doctor in about a month to evaluate how things are going and re-visit the possibility of starting Humira.

Hi Strong Guy, I responded to your first post. After a month I was able to continue TB treatment and start humira. Didn't have any issues at all. Good luck!

Yes, I read your post on the other thread, thanks! It helps to see others' experiences, especially when they are so similar to my own, and how they respond. Hopefully things will pan out, it just may be a slight delay until I get the latent TB addressed.
